Why We Do It

MOMS is focusing its attention on toxins in breast milk because the contamination of breast milk provides us with a snapshot of the health of the fetus’ first environment—the womb—and of the chemical threats the mother may have been exposed to before and during pregnancy. We believe that measures taken to reduce the exposure of mothers and babies to toxic chemicals will result in reduced levels of exposure for everyone, everywhere. MOMS was founded to mobilize pregnant women, nursing mothers, and others who share our concern to stop this real and growing threat.

Benefits of Breastfeeding
We have laws that protect our food, water, and air from environmental toxins. What about breast milk? Here are all the reasons why we should do everything we can to protect this amazing resource!

Chemicals found in breast milk
Along with its antibodies, enzymes, and general goodness, breast milk also contains dozens of compounds that have been linked to negative health effects. This section provides links to fact sheets about the chemicals that have been detected in breast milk, their associated health effects, and ways you can minimize exposure.
